Sea World California

Overview Of Sea World California

SeaWorld was founded in 1964 by four graduates of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). They had originally considered the idea of building an underwater restaurant. Instead of the restaurant idea, a marine zoological park on 22 acres along the shore of Mission Bay in San Diego was in store. Several dolphins, sea lions, and two seawater aquariums, is all that SeaWorld started with, but drew more than 400,000 visitors its first year. The park is owned and operated by Busch Entertainment Corporation (BEC), one of the Anheuser-Busch Companies.

Sea World has several rides including Shipwreck Rapids where a raft-like inner tube carries nine shipwrecked passengers on an exciting five-minute journey through an isolated South Sea island. Or you can board a simulated jet helicopter for an unforgettable motion-based "flight" to a remote research station called Base Station Wild Arctic. Challenge the power of the sea on the Journey To Atlantis water coaster.

If you like shows, than Sea World is for you. Dolphin Discovery showcases bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales in a splashy, high-energy show with some surprise comic moments. It's a fast-paced show featuring tailwalks, spinning jumps and backflips. The Shamu Adventure® features the world-famous killer whale, Shamu, performing along with Baby Shamu and Grandbaby Shamu, in a seven-million-gallon stadium. You can venture into the tail-chasing, ruckus-raising world of your pet in SeaWorld's all-new Pets Rule! Dogs dance, cats cavort and birds flock. Even a potbellied pig gets into the act.

How To Get To Sea World California

Sea World is 1-1/2 miles West of the I-5 freeway on Sea World Drive. There are exits from both directions of travel. If you're approaching I-5 on I-8 (for example, from Hotel Circle) watch the signs carefully; you want to go North, towards Los Angeles, to get to Sea World Drive. From Southbound I-5, turn right onto Sea World Drive. From Northbound I-5, turn right. Sea World's Sky Tower is visible for some distance and serves as a good landmark for your approach. It will be directly to your right as you turn onto Sea World Drive.

If you're coming from Hotel Circle, take I-8 West and turn onto I-5 North. Sea World Drive is the first exit North of I-8. Turn left onto Sea World Drive.

If you're coming in from the Disneyland area for the day, the drive is long (about 1-1/2 to 2 hours) but uncomplicated. Take I-5 South to Sea World Drive (Warning: Do NOT take I-805 when you get to the 5/805 split). Turn right, but get out of the rightmost lane as soon as you can to avoid traffic headaches; the right lane is forced to turn onto another surface street and finding your way back will be a challenge.
